If you are a beginner in compression, read the following books:

T. Bell, J. Cleary, and I. Witten, Text Compression , Prentice Hall, 1990

If Text Compression is too much for you, the following book gives a much slower presentation of the material, with a lot more explanation. I didn't understand the explanation of arithmetic encoding in Text Compression , but it was completely clear in the following:

Mark Nelson, The Data Compression Book , M&T Books, 1992
